Rubí inaugurates the first edition of COLOR Week

Through Sunday, 28 March, citizens can enjoy over 40 activities of all types, created to showcase the unique features of Rubí

The first edition of COLOR Week kicked off this Sunday with a varied offering of activities for the whole family. The event, which the City Council has organised from 21 to 28 March, includes 40 plus proposals based on celebrating the ‘colors’ of Rubí and including all citizens, from children to the elderly.

El Celler was the hub for the inaugural day, which started with a speech from Mayor Ana María Martínez Martínez. In her talk, the mayor explained that COLOR Week is here to focus on Rubí’s unique traits and to give us new challenges and opportunities: ‘The aim is for it to be a reflection of everything that defines us as a city: creativity, living together in harmony and diversity, innovation… We are extremely excited about the schedule, whose aim is to entertain, teach and make us reflect. Yes, also to reflect: because the colours of Rubí can be seen but, especially, felt among its people and their values’.

Martínez stressed the hard work and hope put into the event after an extremely tough year, during which we have had to ‘change our priorities and adapt to the restrictions caused by the pandemic. We cannot let our guard down, everyone’s health still depends on our individual and collective responsibility. However, we do have a more hope-inspiring road ahead of us that will let us revive experiences that have been on the back burner for a long time’.

The mayor’s talk was followed by a recital of the Chamber Orchestra from the Pere Burés Municipal Music School entitled Baroque Affairs, a painting workshop with alcohol-free wine for kids, and a guided tour of El Celler. At the same time, Plaça Nova Estació hosted the surprise intervention Breaking Walls, organised jointly with Xarxa Antirumors in the framework of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, with the aim of raising citizens’ awareness on the prejudices that migrants can face and that hurt them. The opening day of COLOR Week was topped off by a puppet show at the Castell Municipal Museum, a performance by the Oriol Vallès Quartet within the eighth Jazz Season at the Ateneu and, in the afternoon, the theatre work Un dia qualsevol (An Ordinary Day) at La Sala Municipal Theatre.

Upcoming activities

The programming for COLOR Week touches upon many different fields: culture and knowledge, community relations, business competitiveness and interventions in public city spaces. The proposals are being held at diverse spots in the city, although El Celler has a prominent role as the main venue for conferences, round tables, cinema club meetings and concerts.

This Monday at 7pm, the first of a series of talks will be held with the aim of driving forward the research started by Rubí surrounding colour. Architect and member of the Colour Community, Pere Ortega, will talk about colour trends and how they are applied to interior architecture. Like a good part of the schedule, this is a free event. However, since there are limited places, advance registration is required by sending an email to color@ajrubi.cat.

Throughout the week, there will be new conferences, debates, theatre shows, family activities, concerts, exhibitions and guided tours, among slews of other activities. You can take a look at the complete schedule on the COLOR Week website, which also provides full information on all the ways you can register to participate and other useful information, such as a map that pinpoints all the different locations of the Rubí Street Artwalk.

Rubí is COLOR

The event that kicked off on Sunday is framed within the COLOR initiative, a city-wide, cross-cutting and shared project, which started last year with the aim of delving deeper into Rubí’s identity and its characteristic traits. During recent months, the City Council has driven forward several actions as part of this initiative: actions in the urban area aimed at beautifying it, but also making it more pleasant for pedestrians, learning experiences and collaboration in supra-municipal initiatives and networks, and the start-up of extremely exciting and engaging projects related to the artistic expression of colour. Under the leadership of the International City Promotion Service, several areas of the City Council have worked together to transfer and divide this project for cross-cutting municipal management. In this task, the edRa Art and Design School has played a prominent role in creating the image for COLOR and leading many of the initiatives that are part of it.

The aim of the programming for this first edition of COLOR Week is to be a new contribution to this multidisciplinary work, a meeting place where all the different realities and colours of Rubí can be displayed and claimed as our very own. The event takes advantage of coinciding with International Color Day and the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which are commemorated on 21 March.
